Copyright Information for Authors
Publications of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, printed and electronic, are protected by the copyright laws of the United States and are not in the public domain. Copyright on works accomplished by bureau employees and/or published by the bureau is held by the state of New Mexico, through the bureau and New Mexico Tech.
Authors who contribute works to bureau publications but who are neither federal nor New Mexico state employees retain copyright on the content of their individual works. The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources maintains copyright on anthologies and collected works and on all bureau publications, but we request only non-exclusive use rights from non-bureau authors. Work accomplished by bureau employees on bureau time is considered Work for Hire, and the State of New Mexico holds copyright on such work.
Bureau authors who contribute works to outside publishers are not in a position to transfer copyright of their bureau work to those publishers. We do grant non-exclusive use rights to those outside publishers. Outside publishers, however, do maintain copyright on the presentation and compilation of these works, including layout and redrafted figures.
Open-file reports are considered unpublished works in progress and are posted for the convenience of both the users and the authors. The bureau does not maintain copyright on these provisional works.
