Open-File Report 496
Preliminary Geologic Map of the Albuquerque–Rio Rancho Metropolitan Area & Vicinity,
Bernalillo & Sandoval Counties, New Mexico

Sean Connell
November, 2006

VERSION 2.0

The Preliminary Geologic Map of the Albuquerque–Rio Rancho Metropolitan Area and Vicinity, Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties, New Mexico is a digital geologic compilation of sixteen 7.5-minute quadrangles, comprising an area of about 2,500 square kilometers of the Albuquerque basin of north-central New Mexico. This compilation, prepared at a scale of 1:50,000, depicts the geology underneath the cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho and surrounding areas and was completed in order to better characterize geologic controls on groundwater resources and geologic hazards in this rapidly growing urban region. The open-file report consists of a geologic map, cross-sections, and associated data compiled for the greater Albuquerque-Rio Rancho metropolitan area, Bernalillo and Sandoval County, New Mexico. Work on this project is ongoing and a printed GM-series map and comprehensive report will be published at a later date. It is expected that the data available in this report will be modified by future work, but it is being released because of the need for this data by the geologic and technical community. A geologic report describing the map products is currently being written and will be released when finished.

GIS-data and Supplemental data are available on CD-ROM or through an anonymous ftp site.

A CD-ROM of this project may be purchased through the Bureau of Geology offices in Socorro and Albuquerque for $10.
