Connell New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) 801 Leroy Place Socorro, NM 87801-4796 Phone (505) 835-5420 Fax (505) 835-6333 Web site: http://geoinfo.nmt.edu NEW MEXICO BUREAU OF GEOLOGIC AND MINERAL RESOURCES (NMBGMR) OPEN-FILE REPORT 496 Version 2.0 November 1, 2006 On-line data available at: http://geoinfo.nmt.edu/publications/openfile/496. Updates and revisions are anticipated, so please refer to web site. The GIS projects and map products included in this open file report are for a compilation and interpretation of geologic data from the part of the Albuquerque basin containing the cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. The data were compiled by Sean D. Connell from 7.5-minute geologic quadrangle maps produced by the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources and U.S. Geological Survey. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- More than half of the detailed geologic mapping work this compilation is based on geologic quadrangle mapping performed by the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources under the STATEMAP component of the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. Five quadrangles were mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey during their Middle Rio Grande Basin study. The U.S. Geological Survey and the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (a division of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology) provided funding for geological mapping. Data depicted on this geologic map are based on field geologic mapping, compilation of published and unpublished work, and photogeologic interpretation. Locations of contacts are not surveyed, but are plotted by interpretation of the position of a given contact onto a topographic base map; therefore, the accuracy of contact locations depends on the scale of mapping and the interpretation of the geologists involved. Original geologic mapping was conducted as scales of 1:12,000, 1:24,000, and 1:50,000, so some variation in detail should be expected on this compilation. Geologic cross sections are constructed based on the interpretations of the author made from geologic mapping, available geophysical (regional gravity and aeromagnetic surveys released by U.S. Geological Survey), and available subsurface (drillhole) data. The geologic cross sections are intended as an aid to understanding the general geologic framework of the map area, and should not be the sole source of information for use in locating or designing wells, buildings, roads, or any other man-made structures. The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the author and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the State of New Mexico or the U.S. Government. Reference to any specific commercial product, process, or service by trade name, trademark, manufacturer, or otherwise does not constitute or imply its endorsement, recommendation, or favoring by the State of New Mexico or any agency thereof. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- System Requirements: A computer capable of running some or all of the following software (Autorun menu program will only work on a PC computer): Adobe Acrobat (v.7 or later) to view the Report and Plates (*.pdf) -- freeware: ArcGIS (v. 8.2, 8.3, & 9.1 or later) to open GIS projects/data (*.mxd). Version 9.1 is preferred. or ArcReader (V 9.1 or later) to view GIS projects/data (*.pmf) -- freeware: Geologic unit ID labels require Stravetica true type font (USGS) to display properly. ARC Map layer files are included if Arc Map project files do not load properly. Shapefiles for most of the Geodatabases are included in the GISData\Shapefiles\ subdirectory. An ARc GIS version 8.2 project file with only the Geologic Map layout is included in the Shapefile directory. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Map Layout Files: Plate_1_GeologicMap.mxd -- Plate 1 Geologic Map ArcMap Project) Plate_1_GeologicMap.pmf -- Plate 1 Geologic Map ArcReader) Plate_1_GeologicMap_contour.pdf -- Plate 1 Geologic Map with topography PDF) Plate_1_GeologicMap_hillshade.pdf -- Plate 1 Geologic Map with shaded-relief PDF) Plate_2_ver2.pdf -- Plate 2 Cross Section & Supplemental Data PDF) Plate_1_GEOLOGY.lyr -- Layer file for 1:50,000 Geologic Map) Plate_2_Map2a_GenGeoMap.lyr -- Layer file for Map2a data, generalized structure map) Plate_2_Map2C_IsoGravityMap.lyr -- Layer file for Map2C data, isostatic anomaly map) 100k_GenGeoMap.lyr -- Generalized geologic map layer file) TotalGammaRay.lyr -- Total Gamma Ray map layer file) PLATE_1_GeologicMap_ver_8_2.mxd -- Geologic Map layout using version 8.2, created using shapefiles) PLATE_1_GeologicMap_ver_8_3.mxd -- Plate 1 layout using version 8.3) Data Supplement Files: Plate_1_GeologicMap.tif -- Geologic Map GeoTiff, uses LZW compression) Plate_2_Map2A_GenGeoMap.mxd -- Plate 2, Ma2A Generalized Geologic Map ArcMap Project) Plate_2_Map2A_GenGeoMap.pmf -- Plate 2, Ma2A Generalized Geologic Map ArcReader) Plate_2_Map2C_IsostaticGravity.mxd -- Plate 2, Map2C Gravity map ArcMap Project) Plate_2_Map2C_IsostaticGravity.pmf -- Plate 2, Map2C Gravity map ArcReader) DataSupplement_100kGeoMap.pdf -- Generalized Geologic Map 1:100,000 PDF) DataSupplement_100kGeoMap.mxd -- Generalized Geologic Map 1:100,000 ArcMap Project) DataSupplement_100kGeoMap.pmf -- Generalized Geologic Map 1:100,000 ArcReader) DataSupplement_100kGeoMap_hillshade.pdf -- Generalized Geologic Map 1:100,000, shaded-relief base PDF) DataSupplement_GammaRay.pdf -- Total Gamma Ray Survey 1:100,000 PDF) Plate_2_CrossSection_AA.pdf -- Plate 2, Cross Section A-A' PDF) Plate_2_CrossSection_BB.pdf -- Plate 2, Cross Section B-B' PDF) Plate_2_CrossSection_CC.pdf -- Plate 2, Cross Section C-C' PDF) Plate_2_CrossSection_DD.pdf -- Plate 2, Cross Section D-D' PDF) Plate_2_Map2A_GenGeoMap.pdf -- Plate 2, Generalized geologic map PDF) Plate_2_Map2B_StructCont.pdf -- Plate 2, Structure contour map PDF) Plate_2_Map2C_IsostaticGravity.pdf -- Plate 2, Isostatic gravity map PDF) AMC_Geology_50k.style -- Symbol style file) Database Files: AMC_Base.mdb -- Base map database) AMC_Features.mdb -- Geologic features database) AMC_Raster.ldb -- Raster database) AMC_Supplemental_Features.mdb -- Supplemental features database) Coverages -- Subdirectory in GISData, contains shapefiles exported from geodatabases) Other Files: ofr496Bmetadata.met -- Metadata text file) stravetica.ttf -- True type font file for Geologic unit names, copy to directory) readme.txt -- This file) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- You may wish to install copy the GIS data to a hard-disk.
