Southern Taos Valley

In 2011, with funding and a request from Taos County, the AMP initiated a three year study to map groundwater systems between the Picuris Mountains and the Rio Grande and develop a 3-D conceptual model of the southern Taos Valley. Results will help the County, its historic communities, acequias, and neighborhoods to better plan new development that sustains and conserves water resources. The geologically complex region contains shallow aquifers and streams that feed acequias, deep alluvial basin aquifers, and thermal artesian aquifers that ultimately merge and flow to the Rio Grande. Project completion is expected late in 2013.
Funded by Taos County, the Aquifer Mapping Program and the Bureau of Geology.
