Personal
Interests

I share my home by the Rio Grande (as well as most other aspects of my life) with Sara and Gus. Sara (the two-legged one) is an archaeologist; she worked for over ten years at the Museum of Northern Arizona, and, immediately prior to moving to New Mexico, spent seven years as research librarian at Grand Canyon National Park.
Interests
River-running

By no means a professional river-runner, I was for many years a very devoted (if inept) amateur (see photo). I have rafted many stretches of the Colorado River and its tributaries in Utah and Arizona, and hope to explore more widely the rivers of the Southwest.
Books
I am an avid reader of fiction, biography, and historynatural and otherwise.
History of Geology
In particular, I am interested in the history of geologic exploration of North America. I have a special interest in those places that have played an important role in our understanding of the broader principles of geology. I am currently working on an informal field guide to such places, with a focus on the American West. I believe it's important that folks understand that the principles of geology are not something that came to us full-blown. Rather, we have come to understand them through two hundred years of investigation and field work, each new generation building on the work of those who've gone before. And, now more than ever, geology is an endeavor that involves many disciplines.
