El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak as viewed from the Guadalupe Pass area by Bartlett in 1850
on his journey by stage and wagon from San Antonio to El Paso, Texas (from a wood-block
engraving in Bartlett, 1854). It gives some sense of the towering beauty and physical
hardships presented by this area for early travellers and settlers.
