The world's first stamp to depict an oil well as its primary theme
was issued during a time of rampant inflation throughout much of
Europe and certainly in the Caucasus region. Thus, the stamp was
surcharged several times during 1922 to reflect rapidly changing
postal rates. The three stamps below show a 1000-Ruble metal-die
surcharge of 1 June 1922, a 100,000-Ruble metal-die surcharge of
1 September 1922, and a 100,000-Ruble rubber stamp
surcharge of 15 November 1922.
