The World's First Petroleum Stamps


Although oil field scenes were depicted on banknotes as early as 1861 (and even earlier on stock
certificates), the world's first postage stamps to depict oil-related themes were only issued
in 1919-23 by the National Republic of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan SSSR
and the Transcaucasian Federated Republics. Those stamps
