Examples of petro-stamps overprinted (surcharged)
solely or primarily to change stamp denominations:

Romanian airmail stamps surcharged to meet higher postal rates.

Romanian definitive stamps surcharged to meet
new postal rates.

Argentinian definitives surcharged for use on airmail letters.

These Venezuelan airmail stamps (showing a tanker passing under the bridge)
were surcharged
with new values following postal rate changes.

Stamps from Abu Dhabi (now the United Arab Emirates) surcharged with
new currency values and bars through the portrait of the former ruler.

A Qatari surcharge resulting from at change
in currency units from rupees to riyals.

Handstamped surcharges on some of the world's first petroleum
stamps. These were produced using metal dies in a stamping machine
and were created for use during a period of rampant inflation (1923).

Another early example of surcharging is this 11-fold
revaluation of a 1923 stamp from the Transcaucasian
Federated Republics (Armenia, Georgia and
Azerbaijan), produced to meet changing postal
rates during a period of rapid inflation.
