Photographs commonly are the basis for stamp designs, even ones that
are engraved. This photograph of a drilling crew on an offshore Congo
drilling platform at Pointe Noire was the actual model (recovered from
the printers' archives) for the stamp shown at right. Note the pen marks
used to set the proportions for the engraving and the significant and
interesting changes between photograph and stamp.
