Artist's die proofs were produced in several colors for France's first petro-
stamp in 1955. These deckle-edged proofs were produced on heavy stock from
the unfinished and unhardened master die. No official control was
exercised
prior to 1956 on the number of proofs made and therefore, no govern-
ment control seal exists on these items. The printed stamp is shown
below — note the addition of the artist's name at the lower right of
the stamp design subsequent to the production of the die proof.
