In 1933, Russia issued two versions of a stamp that depicted an airplane
over the oilfields
at Baku, Azerbaijan. The stamps differ mainly in being printed on watermarked
and
unwatermarked paper. The watermarked version is shown above and a
series of
single-shade trial color proofs on watermarked paper are found below.
The proofs all show the same basic design but demonstrate that
various levels of background shading and numerous design
colors were tested in the proof printing process.

A series of single-shade trial color proofs were
produced for Russia's xxxx.
