In 1933, Russia issued two versions of a stamp that depicted an airplane over the oilfields
at Baku, Azerbaijan
. The stamps differ mainly in being printed on watermarked and
unwatermarked paper.
The unwatermarked version is shown above along with a
contemporary counterfeit on different paper and with coarser perforations.
A
series of single-shade trial color proofs on unwatermarked paper are
found below. The proofs all show the same basic design but
demonstrate that various levels of background shading and
numerous design colors were tested in the
proof printing process.
