Essay drawings of preliminary versions of Tonga's 1988 set for the
70th birthday of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. The 2.50 Tongan
pa'anga denomination includes an oil well in its design. The
dull appearance of the essay above is due to a film overlay
on which change instructions have been penned. The
essay came from the printers' archives along with
the detailed photocopy enlargement shown below.
Both the design and the denomination of the
petrostamp were substantially altered before
acceptance and printing.
