A very early oil field scene from Pennsylvania is depicted on this unissued 1860's
stock certificate. Note the wooden derricks, tanks and barrels
more easily seen
on the vignette enlargement below. In parts of western Pennsylvania, as in this
area, the barrels of oil were loaded onto barges for transport to railroad
terminals. Leaking barrels, barge collisions and other factors all led to
widespread pollution of rivers and streams.
