There are 46 species of snakes that live in New Mexico.
8 species are venomous and 7 of these are rattlesnakes that belong to the Family Viperidae. All New World vipers, including rattlesnakes
belong to the sub-family Crotalinae, the pit vipers. Rattlesnakes, members
of the genera, Crotalus have a series of horny segments on their
tail, loosely connected to form a rattle. The other venomous snake, the Sonoran Coral Snake can be found in southwestern New Mexico and belongs to the Family Elapidae. This family includes the "old world" cobras as well as the "new world" coral snakes.
23 species can be found in Socorro County. Of these only five are venomous and all belong to the rattlesnakes, members
of the Family Viperidae.
