Guide to OFR-586 Supplementary Data Hydrogeologic Framework of the Village of Pena Blanca, NM New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources Open-File Report 586 Alex J. Rinehart 10 October 2016 Overview: The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources serves as the state's geologic survey, and has been working in Peña Blanca since March 2016 at the request of the NM Environment Department (NMED). The goal was to understand the local hydrogeology of Peña Blanca in order to make a recommendation for an area to place a new well. The need for a new well was highlighted by the discovery of solid waste, a hydraulic fluid tank and a diesel tank immediately adjacent to but on different property than the current municipal well. We met our goal by reviewing the existing literature on the local and regional geology, historical studies of groundwater levels, and regional groundwater chemistry studies. We also collected measurements of groundwater levels and sampled water chemistry in 25 municipal and domestic wells in and around Peña Blanca. Description of Data: /Tables: ofr586_e1_waterlevels.xlsx This file contains the well inventory and water level data used in the report. Included is each well ID, location (UTM Zone 13N, NAD83), surface elevation (ft amsl), well construction information, water level measurement technique (S=steel tape), depth-to-water (ft below measurement point), height of measurement point (ft above land surface), depth-to-water (ft below ground surface), water table elevation (ft amsl), level status (R=recovering from pumping), and measuring agency (NMBGMR=New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources). ofr586_e2_waterquality.xlsx This file contains the water quality information from sampled wells. This includes well ID, well location (UTM Zone 13N, NAD83), surface elevation (ft amsl), sample ID, water type (Drever, 1997), collection date, site type (GW=groundwater well), data source, field parameters, isotopic composition (per mil SMOW), and species concentration listed using their chemical symbol. Units are listed in the table, but follow normal SI units. /GIS: ofr586_penablanca_database.gdb (zip archive) This file is a ESRI ArcGIS geodatabase. Included in the database are all geospatial files used to reach the conclusions of the report, including the recommended area for the new municipal well, historical and recent water table elevation contours (ft amsl), water level measurements, water chemistry data, groundwater flow direction arrows, and regions of the study area (bosque, floodplain, mesa, etc.). ofr586_mappackage.mpk This file is a ESRI map package, which can be opened in ESRI ArcMap directly. In the map, all layers from ofr586_penablanca_database.gdb are included automatically, along with preserving presentation style. ofr586_RecommendedZone.KMZ This file is the recommended area for a new municipal well, and is viewable in Google Earth. To open, simply double click on a computer with Google Earth, or drag-and-drop into an open Google Earth window.
