Notes:

Server log metrics are valuable for understanding overall usage trends, it's important to remember that the data may include webcrawlers, scrapers etc. which can inflate visitor counts. Use these metrics as a general guide, but consider them alongside other analytics for a more accurate picture.

Probably the two most useful metrics are volume of data transferred and the number of distinct hosts served (number of unique computer IP addresses that accessed our site at some point over the fiscal year).

The directory reports can give you an idea of the relative interest between pages, but are by no means a precise metric of public interest in our site. The 'Requests for Pages' count is more useful than the 'Requests' count because any given web page will likely require multiple requests for the individual components of a web page (like images and banner elements). 'Pages' in the statistics include: web pages, PDFs, MS Word documents, PowerPoints, etc. 'Bytes' represents the number of bytes served.  Keep in mind that just moving the decimal point when converting from bytes to MB is incorrect. The '%bytes' column represents the percentage of bytes transferred relative to the total bytes transferred.

If there is interest in the number of downloads of a particular file (accepting the inherent uncertainty of that number), that can be easily calculated but was not included in these reports for brevity.

Some of the earlier statistics did not include Open-file Reports downloaded via FTP. FTP downloads were discontinued after 11-30-2013.

FY 2022 statistics for download volume were extrapolated from 294 days of Apache logs. This metric wasn't initially captured after migration to IIS on 2/20/2022.

Real-time Reports:

We also have a real-time website monitoring tool called Matomo. To see how visitors are using our site, open this page:

The map server also has an an analysis tool that shows a one-year rolling summary: http://nmbg-web1.nmbg.nmt.edu/
