Soils Testing

Lab Manager-Dr. David Love

The Bureau soils laboratory is equipped to conduct a variety of mechanical and hydraulic tests on soil, sediment, and in some cases rock samples. Capabilities include measurements of compaction (standard and modified Proctor), consolidation, Atterberg limits, point load strength, grain-size distribution (sieve and hydrometer), particle specific gravity, bulk density (dry and moist), unconfined compressive strength, moisture content, hydraulic conductivity, and unsaturated moisture diffusivity. A neutron soil moisture/density probe is also available for field studies. Although the soils laboratory cannot accept outside samples on a regular basis, contract testing is possible on a limited number of projects in which test results would benefit the public.
