My job as managing editor for the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources covers a wide range of duties that vary according to the type of job that comes in to our Publications and Editing Group. In addition to organizing publication projects, I also design publications, lay them out, copyedit, and proofread. Part of my job is to research and acquire photos, historic images, and or figures for publication projects. Although my main focus is on general audience and outreach publications, plus a variety of large and small pieces, I also work on technical publications when needed. I also prepare contracts for photographic services, acquiring permissions to use images or figures. I am also the bureau’s liaison to printing companies, working with offset printing, scanning, and reprinting publications such as periodicals, books, posters, small pieces, and some maps.
A selection of the publications that I have worked on are: the Decision Makers Guidebook series 2002–2009; Scenic Trips 18 and 19; the award winning Geology of Northern NM’s Parks, Monuments, and Public Lands guidebook; the Quebradas Guide (a collaborative publication with the bureau and BLM); Circulars 208, 210, 211; New Mexico Geology journal Lite Geology; Earth Matters, and the Annual Report for the American Association of State Geologists, and Resource Map 24, Mining Districts and Prospect Areas of New Mexico by Virginia T. McLemore, and Southern New Mexico’s Parks, Monuments, and Public Lands, which is in progress (2017).
