New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources scientists Dr. Matthew Zimmerer, Dr. Bill McIntosh, and Dr. Nelia Dunbar have an active National Science Foundation award of $370,173 to examine how Antarctica's ice sheets may be impacted by a warming climate. Along with fellow bureau scientist Dr. Nels Iverson, they will examine the characteristics of volcanic rocks at a West Antarctic volcano, Mount Waesche, to learn about the past history of the West Antarctic ice sheet. The research project was recently featured in New Mexico Tech's year-end fundraising drive, which highlights the ways in which NMT researchers are changing the world. You can read more about the project on our research page.
