Field Geologist

Socorro, NM

JOB SUMMARY:
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources seeks a qualified geologist to join our Geologic Mapping Program. Applicants with the aptitude and technical skills to manage fieldwork, data, and databases as part of each project, and a strong desire to conduced field-based geologic mapping in NM are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will participate as a team member in multiple mapping projects, and work with senior geologists and researchers in generating maps, associated data, and ensure geologic and geospatial data is collected to program specifications and national mapping standards. Duties may include (but are not limited to): extensive field mapping, utilizing GIS software, use of graphic design programs, use of database software, and technical writing of reports, manuscripts, and articles for scientists, decision-makers, and the general public. Field studies will focus on (1) Proterozoic and Phanerozoic bedrock units, and/or (2) Quaternary, Neogene, and Paleogene surficial deposits and landforms, including detailed characterization of volcanic, sedimentological, structural, soil-geomorphic, hydrogeologic, and geotechnical features. This position will work within the NM STATEMAP program with support from other contract funding. The position is 75% hard-money and 25% soft-money.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
Geologic mapping. 60% Prepare technical reports to accompany maps. 15% Publish field-derived research in appropriate journals, publications, or books. 15% Interact with private citizens, businesses, government agencies, Indian tribes, and local governments concerning the geology of New Mexico. 5% Assist in the operation of the NMBGMR Geologic Mapping Program. 5%

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree in Geology. Geologic mapping of bedrock and surficial geology and associated structures/landforms. Geologic interpretation of complex field relationships based on field-based research and subsurface data. Knowledge of and ability to work with GIS applications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. or other doctorate level equivalent in Geology. Familiarity with geologic logging of shallow excavations, soils, surficial deposits, and drillholes. Familiarity with NM geology.
