Image of the Day — Convoluted Bedding in the Sangre De Cristo Formation

Convoluted bedding in these Penn-Permian coarse sandstones occurred prior to lithification and may have been caused by slumping or seismic activity along Ancestral Rocky Mountain faults. This view is of the underside of an overhanging cliff.

This outcrop is exposed along the Deer Creek Canyon trail, which is just NE of Canoncito, NM.
