Frank E. Kottlowski / Bureau Fellowship
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources seeks principal investigators to apply for funding to support a graduate student through the Kottlowski/Bureau Fellowship. The fellowship, in honor of Frank E. Kottlowski, is for an incoming graduate student in the earth sciences at New Mexico Tech (NMT) and offers a 12-month Research Assistantship plus tuition costs (guaranteed for 2 years for MS and PhD students, renewable for a third year for PhD candidates). Projects can involve research in any earth or environmental science specialty, but they are expected to include work that is either within the state or of particular interest to the state. Projects led by staff at the NMBGMR will be prioritized. Faculty from the NMT Department of Earth and Environmental Science may also apply, so long as a research committee member is bureau staff.
A one-page proposal should be prepared outlining the goals of the project, benefits to the Bureau of Geology and the state of New Mexico, and a very short budget that includes salary, tuition, and additional costs (e.g., analyses) needed to complete the work. Additional funding may be available to cover some field and laboratory expenses through the Frank E. Kottlowski Memorial Endowment. However, PIs and their student are encouraged to seek additional support to offset project costs.
To be considered for funding, the proposal should be emailed to:
Matthew Zimmerer (matthew.zimmerer@nmt.edu)
by January 15th of each year.
Alumni or other supporters of NMT or the Bureau of Geology are encouraged to support the Frank E. Kottlowski Memorial Endowment. Donations can be made through the NMT Office of Advancement donation form(use the "Designation" menu dropdown to select the "Kottlowski, Frank E. Memorial Endowment").
Note: This fellowship is separate from the NMGS Frank E. Kottlowski Research Award.
