About this image
The Malpais Nature Trail in the Valley of Fires Recreation Area winds its way through 5000 year-old basaltic lava flows in the northern part of the Tularosa Basin just west of Carrizozo, New Mexico. Pahoehoe (smooth, ropy-like surface) and A'a (broken sharp blocky surface) flows are found along the trail. The lava flows here are among the youngest in the continential United States and the largest in the state covering an area of 125 sq miles (32,375 hectares).
