The Bureau of Geology and New Mexico Tech (NMT) received a software donation from IHS Markit that will support petroleum education and research.

The software acquired is the Kingdom Geoscience Bundle with two add-ons (Load PAK and Petrophysics), software commonly used by professionals in industry to study oil and gas reservoirs.

“With this software, researchers can understand reservoirs incorporating petrophysical logs and seismic data on a GIS [Geographic Information Systems]-type platform,” says Bureau petroleum geologist Joseph Grigg.

The software package can be used for well log interpretation, core and cuttings data integration, reservoir and source rock characterization, geologic characterization, mapping, and three-dimensional modeling.

Each year, graduate students in the NMT Earth and Environmental Science (EES) Department compete in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Imperial Barrel Award Program. Students in the competition use a real dataset that includes geologic and geophysical information, production infrastructure, and well data to evaluate a basin for oil and gas resources. They then give a presentation on their findings to a panel of industry experts.

In the last three years, the NMT team has been ranked first once and second two times in the regional competitions.

“This software will be very useful for the team,” says EES Associate Professor Dr. Jolante Van Wijk, “Furthermore, we offer advanced applied geophysics courses, and with this software we can now include a seismic data interpretation and analysis component. Graduate students who work with seismic reflection data will be able to use the software as well.”

Access to this software will help equip students with the skills they need to enter the industry workforce following graduation.
