About this image

Three Historical Events: Eruption, Mass Wasting and Humans. This photo shows the results of three events over geologic time: First, the eruption of basalt lava flows approximate 200,000 years ago followed by a period of erosion and mass wasting. During this second period the blocks of basalt were eroded from the flow and tipped over as they moved down-slope. The vesicles or gas bubbles shown along the bottom of these boulders were originally along the top of the flow. Finally, ancient indigenous people chipped off the outer weathered surface of the basalt exposing the lighter-colored rock creating the petroglyph.

Location

Mesa Point Trail, Boca Negra Canyon, Petroglyph National Monument, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
