About this image
The Copper Flat Mine in south central New Mexico is a porphyry copper deposit discoverd in 1975 and mined until 1982 when low copper prices caused operations to stop. Efforts are underway to reopen the mine. Copper Flat is one of the eastern-most copper porphyry deposits that occur in the Laramide Arizona-Sonora-New Mexico porphyry copper belt which extends from central Arizona across northern Mexico into southwestern New Mexico. The NM Bureau of Geology working with the US Geological Survey has been studying the area for cadmium, manganese, tellurium, rhenium and rare earth elements (REEs).
