About this image
View of the Great Unconformity in the Manzano Mountains, separating Proterozoic granitic rocks (as seen in the photo center and below) and the Pennsylvanian limestones and sandstones. Immediately above the Proterozoic rocks on the tree covered slopes is the Sandia Formation. The distinct 3-4 bands of limestone above the Sandia are in the Gray Mesa Formation, and everything above that is in the Atrasado Formation. Mosca Peak on the right is the highest of the two at 9,509 feet, while Guadalupe Peak on the left reaches 9,450 feet above sea level.
Location
The photo is taken from the Crest Trail.
