JOB SUMMARY:
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (the bureau), a research division of New Mexico Tech, is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Product Manager to lead the development and implementation of data sharing applications for the Water Data and Data Services Programs. This position will be responsible for guiding the strategy, design, and delivery of data sharing applications,
ensuring they meet the needs of scientists, researchers, and staff who rely on laboratory, and field time series data. The Product Manager will act as a key liaison between technical teams, researchers, and leadership to assist with user research, drive adoption and ensure long-term success of the platform. The product manager will also maintain the product backlog and user stories for the systems, as well as refining user stories for sprint planning.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
Strategic Planning. Work with the Water Data Program Manager and Data Integration Manager to define
product vision, roadmap, and priorities for the data management system.
Stakeholder Engagement and User Research. Gather requirements from researchers, labs, and data stakeholders across the bureau. Translate scientific and organizational needs into clear product specifications. Oversee user research and the generation of user stories
Product Development Oversight. Coordinate with software developers, and IT staff to deliver features and improvements. Oversee testing, user training, and documentation. Curate and refine product backlog on a weekly basis. Oversee sprint planning and assignment of work within the development team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Design, or related field 5 years of Post Graduate Experience Required. Demonstrated experience in product management, project management, or system implementation. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Design, or related field. Experience with data management systems, research data workflows, or geospatial databases. Familiarity with product management software such as Jira. Familiarity with software development practices (Agile, user-centered design, or similar). Knowledge of data standards and best practices for research data. Prior experience in higher education, government, or scientific research
environments. Experience with python or other programming languages.
