Research Associate III

Job Summary

The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources is seeking an experienced economic geologist for our Economic Geology Group, which collects, analyzes, and publishes new information on the economic and mining geology of New Mexico. This position provides supervisory, scientific and operational leadership and oversight of projects related to economic geology, petrology, mineralogy, and field mapping and sampling of mineral deposits in New Mexico. Research on ore processes, paragenesis and mineral deposit models will be a key component of the position. Preparation of papers and presentation of work at meetings will be required.

Job Functions

  • Undertake applied research on economic geology, origin of mineral resources, and mineral-resource assessments utilizing modern instrumentation and analytical techniques
  • Interact with industry and government entities as well as Bureau and Tech scientists on research
  • Pursue and secure external research funding
  • Produce written and/or digital papers and reports of project results for publication and presentation at professional venues
  • Collect samples, perform lab work and petrography
  • Work with bureau staff within the Economic Geology Group, GIC and IT Services to organize, digitize and service reports, logs and mineral occurrence related data sets to the public
  • New Mexico Tech service and other duties as assigned
