The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to join the Data Services team. The successful candidate will work as part of the Data Services team to design, develop, secure, and maintain a variety of local and cloud-based database management systems and databases to support research scientists, staff, and a wide range of external stakeholders. This position plays a key role in the ongoing efforts to modernize our data infrastructure, ensuring high-quality data that supports the Bureau's mission of improving data access, transparency, and interoperability. The DBA will collaborate closely with full-stack developers, product managers, program managers, IT, end users, and others to ensure that data and database-related services are reliable, responsive, technically sound, and meet the needs of the Bureau and our external partners. On-site, hybrid, and remote options are available.
Job functions: Database development in collaboration with the Data Services team (schema design, query development, data pipelines, feature implementation, normalization/optimization, integration, legacy database migration, QA/testing); database management across Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Cloud SQL (maintenance, monitoring, replication, performance/availability, capacity planning, VM management, backups/recovery, security, troubleshooting); web and middleware development support depending on skill set and project needs.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer/Data Science, IT, or a related field (relevant professional experience considered case-by-case). Relevant professional experience managing enterprise database management systems and in database development. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
Desired qualifications: Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or similar). Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) or containerization/VMs. Understanding of software architecture, version control (Git), and CI/CD. Experience with agile practices and collaboration tools (GitHub, Jira). Understanding of open data standards and interoperability. Interest in water management, geoscience, and policy in New Mexico. Familiarity with geospatial/environmental data systems.
