About this image

The Dicalite Perlite Mine in Socorro, NM is one of the largest perlite deposits in the world, and is still in production. Perlite is a glassy volcanic rock that expands when rapidly heated in an industrial furnace. Once expanded, it has a number of uses in agriculture, construction, and insulation (among many other uses).

The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources maintains a Perlite Testing Laboratory that provides perlite analyses for industry, government, and the public.
