The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) at New Mexico Tech is among eight state geological surveys that recently signed a cooperative agreement to advance the understanding of the complex and varied geology of the Intermountain West region of the U.S. and bordering areas. NMBGMR and counterparts in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming will collaborate on research projects, share data, and enhance communication efforts.

“The states in the Intermountain West region encounter many of the same challenges surrounding water, energy and mineral resources, geologic hazards, and other societally important concerns related to earth science,” said NMBGMR Director and State Geologist Dr. Mike Timmons. “With this agreement, we’ll be able to find areas of common interest, explore opportunities for funding to work together, and share knowledge.”

A better understanding of the three-dimensional framework of the region’s subsurface geology also will provide regional and national policymakers essential information when making decisions regarding the environment, Dr. Timmons added.

The agreement outlines other possible synergies, including sharing instruments and tools; developing a training program for early career earth scientists; and organizing symposia, conferences, and workshops.

The cooperative charter will remain in effect for five years, with plans to review and update it as needed.
