figure
Map showing the location of the survey over New Mexico. The vast majority—90%—of survey flights will occur within the hatched area, while the remaining flights will be located in the northwestern portion of the project area. Flights will cover areas within Doña Ana, Lincoln, Luna, Sierra, Socorro, Torrance, and Valencia Counties.

2026 U.S. Geological Survey

March 18, 2026

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Mapping Resources Initiative and the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources are partnering to conduct low-level airborne surveys over central and southern New Mexico. The surveys will employ airborne geophysical technology to examine the subsurface and map critical minerals, groundwater, geothermal resources, and geologic hazards. When combined with other data being collected by the Bureau of Geology’s Aquifer Mapping and Monitoring Program, the surveys will greatly enhance our understanding of New Mexico’s geology and natural resources. Learn more about the project on the USGS website.
