Publications of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, printed and electronic, are protected by the copyright laws of the United States and are not in the public domain. Copyright on works accomplished by our employees and/or published by the Bureau of Geology is held by the state of New Mexico, through the Bureau of Geology and New Mexico Tech.
Authors who contribute works to our publications but who are neither federal nor New Mexico state employees retain copyright on the content of their individual works. The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources maintains copyright on anthologies and collected works and on all our publications, but we request only non-exclusive use rights from outside authors. Work accomplished by our employees on during work hours is considered Work for Hire, and the State of New Mexico holds copyright on such work.
Bureau of Geology authors who contribute works to outside publishers are not in a position to transfer copyright of any Bureau of Geology work to those publishers. We do grant non-exclusive use rights to those outside publishers. Outside publishers, however, do maintain copyright on the presentation and compilation of these works, including layout and redrafted figures.
