Welcome to Lite Geology volume 53: Climate Change! This edition will describe the history of climate change as recorded in the paleosols of the Miocene. It will also cover the modern repercussions of climate change in relation to wildfires and groundwater contamination. Articles describing geothermal energy use and our reliance on copper and other critical minerals to power green energy technology are also included. For your classroom, we have a climate crossword puzzle and a climate change activity, “Cement Production and Climate Change,” brought to us by Sharon Sivinski, maker of the STEM with Cog: Climate Change video series. In our “Through the Hand Lens” article, Dr. Nelia Dunbar— volcanologist, former New Mexico Bureau of Geology director, editor, and contributing author of Climate Change in New Mexico Over the Next 50 Years: Impacts on Water Resources—discusses the significance of her work and shares climate change resources for teachers.
