On January 27, 2006 New Mexico Earth Science Achievement Awards were presented to Consuelo Bokum and Thomas D. Morrison. These awards, co-sponsored by the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, a division of New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, and the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) in Santa Fe, are presented annually to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to advancing or facilitating the role of geoscience in areas of education, research, public service, and public policy in New Mexico. Selections were made following a statewide nomination process.
The presentation occurred at noon in the rotunda of the state capitol building on Friday, January 27, during the legislative session in conjunction with Earth Science Day. The presentations will be made by Joanna Prukop, cabinet secretary of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, and Dr. Peter Scholle, Emeritus Director of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources.
For the past 15 years Consuelo Bokum has worked tirelessly on issues related to water, the resource that is arguably the most vital to the future of New Mexico. Her involvement with 1000 Friends of New Mexico and with water planning groups, boards, task forces and councils, in addition to her authorship of several sensible water management policy publications, have given her a well-deserved reputation as one of the “movers and shakers” on water issues in New Mexico.
Thomas D. Morrison is chief of the Hydrology Bureau at the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer. For over 25 years he has been at the forefront of shaping water management policy through New Mexico. His guidance has been instrumental in increasing our understanding of the state’s water resources and has resulted in more informed decision making in this area. He successfully championed the use of sound hydrogeologic and engineering principles as the foundation for good policy, to the benefit of all New Mexicans.
